The palm tree is one of the few trees that ancient man began to cultivate for his food. The 5,000-year-old palm kernels found in Mohenjo-daro indicate that the tree has existed in the subcontinent for thousands of years. Without this tree, life in the Arabian deserts might not have been possible. In the Middle East and South Asia, date palms have been cultivated for thousands of years. Palm trees are among the most nutritious trees per acre. And 150-120 trees can be planted per acre. The date palm is able to withstand a great deal of water scarcity and excess salinity, but the more water there is, the better it will bear fruit.
